The Globe & Mail: The customized magazine concept hits paydirt

By Grant Buckler
For Mygazines, the key to success has been moving from a business model that put the Toronto digital publishing startup at odds with publishers to helping them better understand their audiences and target their content.
The company was born in 2007 when co-founder Darren Budd was browsing through a magazine rack. Why, he wondered, should he buy an entire magazine to read one article? What if he could buy one article from this magazine, one from that one, and create his own customized magazine? Read more
TechVibes: Canada's Mygazines launches Mobile 3.0 Beta for tablets and smartphones

By Knowlton Thomas
Canadian Digital publishing leader Mygazines has launched Mobile 3.0 Beta, an app-like software that works on any mobile device. The HTML5-based system "mimics an in-app experience by supporting video, links, high quality zooming, pinching, swiping, text-only mode, fast content loading and spreads" - all without the need to access from an app store.
Available as part of Mygazines' digital publishing software package, Mobile 3.0 lets publishers, professionals and corporations "produce optimized mobile editions via the same URL they would use for the desktop solution." Users access a link, and the platform detects the device and shows a modified interface. Read more
Financial Post: The Killer of Apps

By Matt Hartley
Ask any developer and they will tell you, platform proliferation can be a pain. For any startup looking to crack into the business of developing applications for mobile devices, crafting software that can work with each and every brand of tablet and smartphone on the market can be both time consuming and expensive.
Luckily there's one application on virtually every mobile device that can help alleviate this particular headache for developers: the browser.
Despite the surging popularity of smartphone app stores and the demand for every brand, company and publisher to create their own mobile applications, many developers are looking to migrate those experiences to the browser via Web applications, which typically only need to be coded once and then work across a range of browsers on a wide variety of devices... These days how people view content has dramatically changed thanks to the proliferation of mobile devices like e-readers, smartphones and devices like the iPad. As a result, publishers and other content creators need to reinvent how they deliver their content to their audiences. That’s where we come in.
Mygazines is a Web-based software as a service platform that provides publishers, corporate communicators and marketers with the ability to produce, distribute, track and analyze their content on any Web-enabled device.

Folio Mag: Moving Toward 'Device-Independence'

By Matt Kinsman
While developing iPhone apps has been all the rage for publishers and their digital edition vendors in recent months, moving toward platforms that target all mobile devices and e-readers without requiring additional work from the publisher will be the focus for 2010.
Consumer enthusiast publisher Harris Publishing recently started using the new Mygazines Mobile service, which uses the mobile Web browser (rather than creating device-specific apps) to offer digital editions across mobile devices ranging from the iPhone to the Android.
“We’re trying to find extra ways for our subscribers to get the content of the magazines,” said Chris Searle, digital manager and graphic designer with Harris. “We’re giving them multiples ways to view it or access it at their convenience. When we were looking at digital magazines, we didn’t want it to be another Web page full of additional information. We wanted to make sure it still had the look and feel of the magazine with its own identity.” Read more
Tech Crunch: Mygazines Does Not Launch An iPad App

By Robin Wauters
Digital publishing company Mygazines has launched its iPad Edition, a browser-based mobile reading system for Apple’s tablet device. In case the title of this post confused you: it’s decidely not an iPad app, but rather an integral part of Mygazines Mobile, a universal e-reading system that works on almost any touch-screen device, including the iPhone, iPod touch and Android phones.
But the iPad, with its bigger screen and and impressive multimedia capabilities, obviously lends itself for these types of enhanced publications much more than even the most capable smartphones. Readers can simply head to a dedicated publication URL (example) and Mygazines’ system will automatically recognize and display a unique interface for the iPad... Read more
