THE GUESTLIST NETWORK RESTAURANTS 51 RECIPE OF THE MONTH Pancakes and Ways to Fill Them Eating out on a budget needn't result in a battered sausage and chips. Spice things up this month with TGN's pick of London's most cost-effective curry cafes and restaurants. Sweet and Spicy, Brick Lane Dating back to the 1960s, this is one of the original Brick Lane curry cafes. Pictures of over- weight wrestlers adorn the walls. stainless steel tableware and anaemic fluorescent lighting cre- ate a mess-hall atmosphere. But what Sweet and Spicy lacks in terms of décor, the food makes up for in flavour and price. The spicy lamb curry is delicious. This is among the most authen- tic curry restaurants in the capi- tal. Highly, highly recommended. BYOB (Bring your own booze). 1 2 Lahore 1, Commercial Road An absolute institution, Lahore is one of the most popular curry restaurants in East London. Pakistani and Bangladeshi regu- lars dine alongside a rabble of people from all walks of life who flock there to experience some of the finest flavours London has to offer. With expert spicing and a real emphasis on fresh- ness, this is as close as you'll get to the genuine article without travelling to the source itself. This restaurant is always busy so book in advance. BYOB. 3 Needoo Grill, Whitechapel For tasty Pakistani grills and cur- ries, Needoo is one of the best value canteens out there. Serv- ing a wide selection of kebabs, vegetable curries, samosas and meat dishes alongside a variety of delicious grill options—the lamb chops are incredible—this restaurant is all too easily over- looked. Don't let the garish fa- çade scare you off. The interior is relatively inoffensive, if you ignore the wide-screen TV, and you won't be disappointed with the plate you receive. BYOB. 4 Indian Veg, Chapel Market Indian Veg is a vegetarian buf- fet restaurant with a definite theme: every available inch of wall space is plastered with pro- vegetarian propaganda. Choose between brown and white rice and then select from an array of vegetable curries, pakoras, bhajis, dips and salads. 'Vegetar- ians make better lovers, appar- ently, and if that wasn't enough to convince you, rest assured, the simple food is tasty and, at £3.95 per head, ludicrously cheap. BYOB. Shrove Tuesday comes but once a year. With this foolproof recipe and our selection of delicious fillings, even the most hapless chefs will be able to create something gourmet out of the humble pancake this year. YOUR HANGOVER Everyone likes to go out and get wasted once in a while. For many of us, partying would be much more frequent if only there wasn't the hangover to deal with... Thanks to the brilliant minds at TGN, we've come up with a handy list of places to ease the effects of that morning head smash. FOUR PLACES TO CURE Beigel Bake Brick Lane This bagel shop can be found in Whitechapel and is a fond favou- rite for the locals. And I mean, let's be honest, who doesn't love a bagel? It's cash only, so Visa-abusers be warned, but with prices starting at 35p, you'll probably have enough shrapnel in your pocket to at least be able to afford something. Tinseltown, Farringdon Tinseltown is an American-themed dinner, offering a full menu until the wee hours of the morning (closing at 4am on Saturday and Sunday). They offer more than 60 different milkshake flavors, which, depending on how much you put away last night - could be a good or bad thing. On average meals cost around £10-£20. Tacolisa, Croydon Smack dab in the middle of Croy- don, Tacolisa is open midday-3am Thursday-Saturday. It's a seriously delicious locale to sate those late night Mexican cravings. They offer some of the best tacos and nachos, and if you've managed to lose your mates (which happens), the staff are very friendly and always up for a drunken chatter. Somine, Hackney This totally awesome Turkish cafe offers 24 hour service and is based on Kingsland High Street in Hackney. It's a favourite among locals (us included) mainly for the fact that it's cheap and you can pretty much order anything you want to cure your pending hangover; just in time for work tomorrow morning. INGREDIENTS: (MAKES 8) • 4oz (100g) plain flour • • Half a pint (250ml) milk 1 egg • Pinch of salt • TO COOK • • • • 50g of butter (for frying) • Make a small well in the centre and add egg. Sieve the flour and salt into a mixing bowl • Melt butter in hot pan. Start whisking, gradually adding the milk, and keep go- ing until you get a lump-free mixture with a cream-like consistency. • When butter bubbles and smokes slightly, pour 2 table- spoons of batter into pan. • Cook until golden brown. Toss and repeat. Tilt the pan to create a thin, even layer. Now fill and devour. Here are some of TGN's favourite fillings: SWEET • • • • • • • • • The Classic: Lemon and sugar. The Old Favourite: Nutella, banana & chopped nuts. The Wimbledon: Strawberries, whipped cream & icing sugar. The French: A generous dollop of your favourite ice cream. The Breakfast Formula: Banana, yogurt, honey & sultanas. SAVOURY • The Dutch: Ham and cheese. The Swiss: Fried mushrooms, garlic & Gruyere cheese. The Royale Florentine: Wilted spinach, smoked salmon & poached egg. The Mediterranean: Pesto, mozzarella, fresh tomato & a sprinkling of pine nuts. The Spanish Breakfast: Chorizo, fried potato cubes, scrambled eggs & chilli. THREE RIDICULOUS DRINKS Bacontini We'd like to think that most people don't regularly enjoy a glass of gin with bacon in it! If you fancy a taste of your favourite breakfast staple , you just have to head over to that wacky US of A and try one of these out. Bottled Tap Water? Selling Tea to the Chinese might be nigh on impossible but one en- trepreneurial genius has manged to sell New Yorker's their own tap water. This could only happen in the concrete jungle where dreams are made. Buckfast Glaswegians call it 'Comotion Lo- tion' while Aberdeen's populace opt for the less subtle 'Smashu- pyerhooose Juice'. This isn't your average red wine with an alcohol content of 15% and more caf- feine in it than Red Bull.
